What does an insurance adjuster look for after hail?

Adjusters look for hail hits on the shingles, which usually appear as dark spots where the granules have been knocked loose. They typically count hits within a marked test square on each slope of the roof, and they check gutters, vents, window screens and other metal surfaces for dents.

What hail damage looks like

Hail rarely punches holes in asphalt shingles. More often it knocks granules loose and bruises the shingle underneath, leaving a dark spot. This kind of damage is usually hard to see from the ground.

Granules protect shingles from the sun. When they are knocked loose, the shingle can wear out faster and may start to leak over time.

The test square

Adjusters commonly mark a test square on each slope of the roof, often ten feet by ten feet, and count the hail hits inside it. Insurance companies use those counts to decide whether a slope, or the whole roof, needs to be repaired or replaced.

Other signs of hail

Adjusters also check metal surfaces around the home, such as vent caps, gutters, downspouts, window screens and air conditioning units. Dents in these areas help show the size of the hail and the date of the storm.

How to prepare

Have your roof inspected soon after a storm. If emergency repairs are needed, take pictures of the damaged areas before making temporary repairs, and avoid permanent repairs until the adjuster has inspected the damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I be there when the adjuster comes?

It is a good idea to be available so you can ask questions about the inspection.

What if the adjuster says there is no damage?

You can ask your insurance company about a re-inspection. Photos and a damage report from your own inspection can help.

What if the estimate leaves something out?

Review your claim summary with your roofing contractor. Items that were missed can often be added to the claim.
